JAKARTA - The Silverstone Circuit has immortalized the name of seven times world champion Lewis Hamilton as the name for the legendary pit circuit line in England.

Hamilton has won the British Grand Prix at Silverstone seven times during his Formula 1 career.

Ahead of the season's finale in Abu Dhabi, David Coulthard, president of the British Racing Driver's Club (BRDC), owner of the Silverstone Circuit, announced that the pit line on the Silverstone circuit, the International Pit Straight, from today, Sunday, will be known as the Hamilton Straight.

"This is the first time in Silverstone's history that this section of the circuit is named after an individual," Coulthard said as quoted by Antara on the official Formula 1 website.

"Lewis has been a huge part of this history and the directors at the Club and I feel there is no better way to mark that off than renaming the iconic straight pit track in recognition of his record run."

2020 has seen Hamilton raise the bar in F1 as the 35-year-old equals and then surpasses Michael Schumacher's record 91 wins to become the most successful racer in F1 history.

He previously also matched the German rider's record seven world championships.

The Silverstone track area which bears the name Hamilton was the location where fans gathered in front of the podium to celebrate the victory. Hamilton also often involves his supporters in celebrating, such as by doing 'crowd surfing' on top of his fans.
