JAKARTA - Egypt wants to propose to host the 2036 Olympics, said sports minister Ashraf Sobhi on the sidelines of a meeting with International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach in Cairo on Saturday.

"President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi has given Egyptian permission to run as host of the 2036 Olympics," Sobhi said, quoted by Antara from AFP, Sunday.

If successful with the submission, Egypt could become the first Arab or African country to host the Olympics.

"Egypt has solid sports infrastructure and can hold the Olympics, this will be historic," said Bach at a press conference session accompanied by Sobhi.

Egypt will become Indonesia's rival who has already volunteered to host the 2036 Olympics, which the government says will hold in the National Capital (IKN) of the Archipelago.

Egypt's officials announced earlier this month that Egypt, Greece, and Saudi Arabia are discussing plans to host the 2030 World Cup.

Egypt in 2019 hosted the Africa Cup of Nations as well as last year's handball world championship during a pandemic.
