Freiburg Vs RB Leipzig Ends In Penalty Shootout, Die Bullen Wins German Cup Trophy For The First Time

JAKARTA - RB Leipzig made history in the German Cup. They won the first German Cup trophy in the club's history after winning on penalties over Freiburg, Sunday, May 22, in early morning western Indonesia time.

Amazingly, Die Bullen -RB Leipzig's nickname - had to play for one hour with 10 players at the Berlin Olympic Stadium.

The penalty shootout was played after in normal time the two teams drew 1-1. The same score remained in extra time.

Midfielder Maximilian Eggestein put Freiburg ahead in the 19th minute with a superb low shot from the edge of the box. This goal was subject to VAR review due to the possibility of handball before the goal, but was later confirmed.

Christopher Nkunku spoiled the Freiburg fans' mood by equalizing in the 76th minute after hitting the ball following Willi Orban's header.

A stoppage-time equalizer saw Leipzig fired despite playing down to 10 men from the 57th minute following a red card for defender Marcel Halstenberg for a risky tackle on forward Lucas Hoeler.

In the high-fives, Freiburg captain Christian Guenter and striker Ermedin Demirovic failed to fulfill their duties. Only two Freiburg players made it, namely Nils Petersen and Keven Schlotterbeck.

Meanwhile, the four Leipzig kickers consisting of Christopher Nkunku, Willi Orban, Dani Olmo, and Benjamin Henrichs managed to enter the ball, as reported by Antara.
