JAKARTA - Former Italian national football team player Marco Materazzi admitted that he became interested in badminton, even idolizing Indonesian women's doubles Greysia Polii after winning the gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

This was revealed by Materazzi during an interview with Greysia Polii. The arrival of the former Inter Milan player was also to provide motivation to the Red and White team who at that time were competing in the 2020 Thomas and Uber Cup in Denmark.

"I'm a new badminton fan and your (Greysia Polii) fan when you messaged me after the Olympics," Materazzi said in a PBSI video broadcast received on Saturday, October 23.

Greysia admits that she is a big fan of Inter Milan. He even sent a video message in the form of a happy birthday to Materazzi which was then replied when Greysia and Apriyani Rahayu won the Olympic gold medal.

Furthermore, Materazzi, who had hung up his boots in 2011, said he was happy to meet the Indonesian badminton team in the Thomas and Uber Cups.

His support also bore fruit because Indonesia managed to bring home the Thomas Cup after 19 years of waiting by beating China 3-0 in the final.
