Tragic, Sumatran Tiger Found Dead Entangled In Wire In Bengkalis

JAKARTA - A Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) was found dead by a community in Tanjung Leban Village, Bandar Laksamana District, Bengkalis Regency, Riau Province, with the condition of its left front leg entangled with a type of thick wire mesh or commonly called a sling.

Acting Head of the Riau Province Natural Resources and Conservation Center, Fifin Arfiana Jogasara, said the discovery originated from information from the community, who was a gardener next to a Sumatran tiger that had been entangled.

"The person concerned reported it to the Bukit Batu Sector Police, and forwarded the news to the Riau KSDA Center. The Bukit Batu Resort Team immediately went to the scene to check and initial identification," said Fifin, quoted from Antara, Sunday, October 17.

Furthermore, the team secured the location where one Sumatran tiger carcass was found to avoid crowds of residents. The location is in a Convertible Production Forest (HPK) area in the form of a community cultivation area.

The location is perpendicular about 21.85 kilometers from the Bukit Batu Wildlife Reserve area.

"The female tiger has now been evacuated to Pekanbaru for a necropsy to find out the cause and estimate how long the tiger has been dead and the cause," he said.

For this incident, he appealed to all levels of society not to set a snare for any reason because it is dangerous for animals including protected animals, and can be subject to sanctions in accordance with Article 40 of Law Number 5 of 1990 concerning Conservation of Biological Natural Resources and their Ecosystems.

"Those who deliberately commit violations may be subject to a maximum imprisonment of five years and a maximum fine of Rp100 million. Likewise, those who commit violations due to negligence will be subject to a maximum imprisonment of one year and a maximum fine of Rp50 million," he said.
