3,200 Requests For Divorce Go To West Jakarta Religious Courts, Why Are Lawsuits Dominated By Wives?

JAKARTA - The West Jakarta Religious Court since early 2021 has received 3,200 cases, the majority of which are divorce cases.

"But in general we have received up to 3,200 cases so far this month. Divorce cases are more dominant," said Chairman of the West Jakarta Religious Court (PA) Munir when confirmed at the West Jakarta Religious Court Office, Friday 15 October.

This number is considered an increase when compared to the mass before the corona virus (COVID-19) pandemic.

According to Munir, there are several factors that have contributed to the increase in the number of cases, particularly regarding divorce in the West Jakarta area. One of them is the economic factor affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, quoted from Antara.

The majority of cases handled by the West Jakarta Religious Court are divorce claims filed by the wife.

"So most of the cases are divorced. If it is filed by the husband, it's called talak divorce. So men ask permission to the court to get divorced," he said.

However, not all cases filed ended in divorce. Many married couples do not get divorced because it is mediated by the court.

The mediation aims to give a husband and wife perspective on the impact of divorce before making their determination to go to court.

"There are also some who are not divorced. This means that they can consult so that they do not file a case," said Munir.
