La Nina Triggers Floods And Landslides In Southeast Sulawesi At The End Of 2021, BMKG Urges To Carry Out Mitigation

SULTRA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that a La Nina phenomenon will occur in the Southeast Sulawesi (Sultra) region. This phenomenon could also trigger a hydrometeorological disaster in late 2021.

Head of the South Konawe Climatology Station (Konsel) Aris Yunatas said the potential for a hydrometerological disaster would occur at the end of 2021 because in November-December the region entered the rainy season followed by a potential global phenomenon, La Nina.

"La Nina is predicted to appear at the end of 2021, so that it coincides, meaning that the beginning of November-December rain will be accompanied by a global phenomenon, namely La Nina, so there is a potential for hydrometeorological disasters," he said when contacted from Kendari, Antara, Thursday, November 7.

Hydrometeorological disasters can be in the form of floods, flash floods and landslides.

"The La Nina phenomenon is more about an increase in rainfall due to an increase in the incoming wet air, thereby increasing the growth of convective clouds, then in our area the rain will increase," he explained.

The province of Southeast Sulawesi as one of the areas in Indonesia that often experiences flooding, and in mainland areas must take steps to mitigate these various potential disasters.

Synergy of all parties needs to be carried out starting from upstream with preparedness information. This is important to do so as to minimize unwanted things.

"By entering the rainy season coupled with La Nina, we appeal to the people of Southeast Sulawesi to be aware of the hydrometeorological disaster that will occur at the beginning of the rainy season because there is La Nina there," said Aris.
