JAKARTA - Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta, Ahmad Riza Patria, asked the residents of the capital city to save on the use of ground water. This is because large-scale extraction of groundwater can reduce Jakarta's land surface.

"We ask all residents of Jakarta to save water. Water must be protected even if we are not in the Middle East, it is a hot desert where water is scarce," said Riza at City Hall, Tuesday, October 5.

Riza said that currently the government is increasing the supply of piped clean water services operated by PAM Jaya. Given, now the coverage of PAM services in Jakarta is still 65 percent.

However, he asked residents who have not had access to piped water to wait by saving on the use of ground water.

"More and more PAMs can channel the need for clean water, the suction of water from the pump will also decrease. But we must protect our environment, one of which is by ensuring that clean water needs are saved as much as possible," said Riza.

Previously, the Head of the Water Resources Service, Yusmada Faizal, explained the reason why the DKI Provincial Government had not issued a regulation prohibiting groundwater extraction.

In a meeting with Commission D of the DKI DPRD, Yusmada explained that currently the clean water piping system in Jakarta has not yet reached all areas. Thus, if groundwater extraction is prohibited, it will lead to water scarcity.
