GARUT – Visitors to Class IIB Correctional Institution (Lapas) Garut Regency, West Java were caught smuggling crystal methamphetamine into chicken bones. The food was intended for one of the prisoners in the prison. But fortunately the action was discovered by the inspecting officer.

The incident was confirmed by the Head of Garut Class IIB Prison RM Kristyo Nugroho. His party managed to detect a new mode of smuggling methamphetamine that was inserted into chicken bones during an inspection of food sent by visitors to Garut Prison, Monday.

"The smuggling mode that is being carried out this time is relatively new and unique, because the perpetrators intentionally put the illicit goods inside the chicken bones," Kristyo said through a press release in Garut, Monday, October 4, evening.

He said that the COVID-19 pandemic did not discourage people or visitors from Garut Prison from smuggling narcotics into prisons with various modes, as is currently happening in Garut Prison.

A visitor to Garut Prison, he said, tried to smuggle crystal methamphetamine through food for the inmates that was inserted into chicken bones so that the guard officers would not know.

"A visitor tried to smuggle drugs through food, but thanks to the alertness of P2U officers and service personnel, this was thwarted," he said.

He said that the initial disclosure was when officers became suspicious that the food brought by visitors had lots of chicken bones in tofu and chicken vegetables, and then they were observed more carefully until they split the chicken bones.

"A white crystal package was found which is suspected to be a type of shabu-shabu in one of the chicken bones," he said.

With this finding, the Garut Prison immediately coordinated with the Garut Resort Police and reported the findings to the Head of the Correctional Division of the Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights of West Java Province.

The case was further investigated by the Garut Police Narcotics Unit for further investigation of drug trafficking cases in Garut Regency.

Kristyo said that the findings of the drug smuggling case made his staff continue to increase their vigilance and be more thorough in checking every guest who came and food that entered the Garut Prison.

"We have instructed all ranks to further tighten the inspection, search of goods deposited from visitors who will enter the Garut prison," he also said.
