JAKARTA - Deputy Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Nawawi Pomolango assessed that the reactivation of the corruptor hunting team initiated by the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam) Mahfud MD was unnecessary.
He considered that the failure of this team in the past should not be repeated by reforming it.
"I think the formation of this team was in 2002 and in fact it did not provide optimal results enough to be a lesson and not to be repeated," Nawawi told reporters in a written statement, Tuesday, July 14.
Instead of creating a new team again, Nawawi assessed that the steps the government should take so that corruptors who are fugitive abroad can be arrested are to strengthen coordination and supervision between law enforcement agencies and other related bodies.
"It also encourages the spirit of an integrated criminal justice system which has recently become meaningless jargon," he said.
The former judge for corruption then explained that the KPK had so far made various efforts to prevent the suspect from running away. One of them is monitoring their movements.
"A person who is almost certain to be named a suspect will continue to be monitored until the time for detention is taken," he said.
Mahfud MD responded to the criticism conveyed by the KPK. "I am also studying and considering seriously how to revive the corrupt hunting team. Whether it is extended or not, it depends on the analysis of its effectiveness," said Mahfud.
The former Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court (MK) said that this team could not be created immediately because it needed a Presidential Instruction (Inpres) as a basis.
Even so, he admitted that he had obtained the initiative to make the Presidential Instruction through the State Minister's Letter No. B-30 / M. Sesneg / D-1 / HK.05.00 / 01/2020. However, this Presidential Instruction still has to be discussed with cross-agencies to calculate its benefits and effectiveness.
He agreed with Nawawi's statement. However, Mahfud wants existing institutions such as the National Police and the Attorney General's Office to be more optimal with the existence of this hunting team.
"I agree with Pak Nawawi from the KPK so that the making of the Presidential Instruction must also learn from the past as well, it cannot be made immediately," he said.
So, he asked, existing law enforcement institutions can continue to work to hunt down corruptors and save state assets that were robbed when corrupt practices occurred.
"We are sure that the National Police and the Attorney General's Office can be more optimal after this. The Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs will continue to coordinate with these institutions. Hopefully there will be results before the formation of another hunting team," he concluded.
