Tangerang Class I Prison Fire, 41 Inmates Died

JAKARTA - A fire broke out at the Class I Correctional Institution (Lapas) Tangerang, Banten. As a result of this fire, 41 prisoners died.

"As for the 41 people who died," said Metro Jaya Police Chief Inspector General Fadil Imran to reporters, Wednesday, September 8.

Not only the victims died, this fire also caused dozens of inmates to be injured. Ranging from minor to severe burns.

"Then there were 8 (severe) injuries, 72 people with minor injuries," said Fadil.

Based on reports received, the fire began to flare at around 1:45 am. However, the exact cause of the fire is not yet known.

At this point, the fire has been extinguished. The joint team of the National Police and the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham) is now focusing on security.

"The fire was extinguished around 3 am, the fire started to burn around 1.45 pm. Most likely this fire lasted for more than two hours," said Fadil.
