JAKARTA - The female US Army soldier and translator from her unit, Sergeant H. Fairchild (Halima), admitted that she liked the Indonesian language and culture during the joint training.
"I prefer to speak Indonesian and I really like the Indonesian language and culture," said Sergeant H. Fairchild through the TNI AD YouTube channel which was monitored in Jakarta, reported by Antara, Friday, September 3.
Due to his liking and love for the Indonesian language and culture, the US Army soldier strengthened his determination to learn Indonesian for a year before joining the joint training program between the Indonesian Army and the US Army.
"I chose to study it for one year before coming here," he said.
The female soldier, whose other name is Halima, shared that her first impression when she met TNI AD soldiers was their surprise when they found out that she was fluent in Indonesian.
As an English-to-Indonesian translator, Halima admits that there are some English vocabularies that are quite difficult or complicated for her to understand.
With her ability to use these two languages, Halima helps TNI soldiers interpret or translate the vocabulary so that it can be understood.
While serving in Indonesia, Sergeant H. Fairchild admitted that he was nervous when he learned that he would meet with the Army Chief of Staff (Kasad) General TNI Andika Perkasa.
"I'm nervous because Kasad is a very important person," he said.
After his meeting with Kasad and General Chairperson of Persit Kartika Chandra Kirana Hetty Andika Perkasa, the US Army soldier said that Kasad and his wife were friendly and kind people.
After completing the joint training task, Halima will revisit Indonesia and try out other areas, especially Yogyakarta.
His interest in Yogyakarta is motivated by the historical and cultural values that exist in the area.
"I want to visit every island because each island has a different culture," he said.
