MEDAN - The Medan City Government, North Sumatra, is optimistic that Medan will come out of the title of the dirtiest metropolitan city based on the assessment of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in 2019.
"The city's predicate is the dirtiest, because Adipura's assessment is that the condition of the TPA (Final Disposal Site) weighs 60 percent," said Head of the Medan City Parks and Hygiene Department, Husni, as quoted by Antara, Thursday, September 2.
Currently, he continued, Adipura's assessment was carried out based on Regional Policies and Strategies for the Management of Household Waste and Types of Household Waste (Jakstrada).
In Jakstrada, said Husni, 30 percent of the waste management is carried out upstream, while the other 70 percent is downstream.
"This waste management is made up of upstream and downstream management. If Jakstrada is good, then we meet the assessment threshold. Because upstream waste management eliminates 20 to 30 percent of waste," he explained.
In addition, Husni said, integrated waste management also continues to be carried out from the household level, the Integrated Waste Management Site (TPST), to the TPA.
"This integrated waste management is carried out to reduce community waste before it is transported to the TPA. We are optimistic, the Mayor's measurable steps can make Medan City clean of waste," said Husni.
He also mentioned that the waste management at TPA Falls, Medan Marelan currently uses a "sanitary landfill" system with biotechnology showing significant results.
"The mountain of garbage has decreased and the unpleasant smell from the pile of garbage has begun to decrease. The first mountain of garbage has disappeared and is now entering the second mountain of garbage," explained Husni.
