Unesco's Request For Komodo Island, Walhi: The Document Becomes A Warning To The Government

JAKARTA - The World Heritage Committee (UNESCO) has asked the Government of Indonesia to stop all tourism infrastructure development projects in the Komodo National Park area in West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. The request is stated in the UNESCO World Heritage Committee document numbered WHC/21/44.COM /7B published after the online convention on 16-31 July 2021.

Director of WALHI East Nusa Tenggara Umbu Wulang Tanaamahu said his party agreed to UNESCO's request that the construction of tourism projects in Komodo National Park be stopped.

"This means that the government has never coordinated with UNESCO all this time. Until then UNESCO had to be 'warned', and this is not the first time," said a statement from the Twitter account @walhinasional quoted by VOI, Wednesday, August 4.

With the release of an official document from the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, the government should admit that it had made a mistake in managing Komodo National Park, the statement added.

"This document is also a warning for the government to really focus on integrated and sustainable efforts to protect the Komodo National Park ecosystem and develop people's eco-friendly economies," the statement said.
