Procedures For Eid Prayer At Home According To MUI Recommendations: Still Legitimate Even If Only 4 People Followed, But...

JAKARTA - Secretary General of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Amirsyah Tambunan shared the procedures for carrying out Eid prayers 1442 H/2021 at home considering that Indonesia is still facing the COVID-19 pandemic.

Amirsyah said that the Eid prayer can be carried out alone, but it is better if it is in congregation with other family members.

"This is an opportunity for someone to become a priest for his wife and children, as well as grandchildren," said Amirsyah, Antara, Jakarta, Monday, July 19.

Amirsyah continued, the person appointed to be the imam when performing the Eid prayer at home is the person who understands the terms and pillars of prayer.

"Or a family member who is able to become an imam and a preacher," he added.

Amirsyah also added that the MUI Fatwa Commission had stated that the Eid prayer at home was legal even though only 4 people attended.

This is in accordance with fatwa number 28 of 2020 concerning the Guide to Kaifiat Takbir and Eid Prayers during the COVID-19 Pandemic. This fatwa also applies to the Eid al-Adha prayers.

The fatwa states that the number of worshipers for Eid prayers at home is at least four people consisting of one priest and three congregations.

Although sermons are one of the legal requirements for congregations of Eid and Eid prayers, but if the congregation is attended by less than four people or no one is able to become a preacher, then it is permissible not to carry out the sermon.

The procedure for carrying out the Eid prayer is the same as the Eid prayer with seven takbirs in the first rakaat and five takbirs in the second. The difference lies only in the intention of prayer.

Here are the intentions of the Eid prayer:

As a priest

لِّيْ لعِيْدِ اْلأَضْحَى امًالِلهِ الَى

(Ushallii sunnatan liidil adha rok'ataini imaaman lillaahi ta'aala)

Meaning: I intend to pray two rak'ahs of Eid al-Adha as a priest because of Allah ta'ala.

As mama

لِّيْ لعِيْدِ اْلأَضْحَى الِلهِ الَى

(Ushallii sunnatan liidil adha rok'ataini makmuman lillaahi ta'aala)

Meaning: I intend to pray two rak'ahs of Eid al-Adha as a congregation because of Allah ta'ala.
