Indonesian Consulate General In Hong Kong Gives Assistance To PMI Affected By Layoffs In Macau

BEIJING - The Indonesian Consulate General in Hong Kong has again provided logistical assistance to Indonesian migrant workers who have been laid off in Macau.

The aid is in the form of basic necessities and personal protective equipment, the distribution of which is in collaboration with the Indonesian Migrant Workers' Union (IMWU) Macau, the Indonesian Consulate General in Hong Kong said in a statement on Monday, July 5.

The PMIs who were laid off have not been able to return to Indonesia because of the unavailability of direct flights from Macau to Indonesia.

Throughout 2020, the Indonesian Consulate General in Hong Kong has distributed 834 packages of staple foods to PMIs who have been laid off due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to logistical assistance, the Indonesian Consulate General in Hong Kong has also facilitated the repatriation of 618 PMIs who previously could not return to Indonesia from Macau.

The repatriation process is through collaboration involving various Indonesian community organizations in Macau, including IMWU.

Previously in Asia's largest gambling city, there were around 5,000 PMIs working in the formal and informal sectors.
