24 Hours Trapped By Residents, Sun Bear In Dumai Riau Successfully Rescued By BKSDA

JAKARTA - The Sweeping Traps and Conflict Handling Team for the Dumai River Nature Tourism Park, the Riau KSDA Great Hall, rescued a sun bear after it was entangled in a resident's garden in Tanjung Palas Village, Dumai Timur District, Dumai City.

"A sun bear was reportedly entangled in a resident's garden, precisely in Tanjung Palas Village, Dumai Timur District, Dumai City, last Wednesday, June 30. The animal named Latin Helarctos malayanus is thought to have been entangled for 24 hours," said the Head of KSDA Region II , Heru Sutmantoro told reporters in Pekanbaru, Antara, Friday, July 2.

The rescue was carried out when the team happened to be conducting a trap operation around the area. Residents later reported that they heard roars and saw a sun bear entangled

When he arrived at the location, he said, the team found a sun bear entangled. From observations, it is estimated that the protected animal has been entangled for 24 hours and its condition is also a little weak.

"The team then made a manual rescue effort and immediately severed the raffia rope that was entangling the sun bear's right front leg using dodos," he said.

Even though it had been entangled for a day and a night, the bear's leg was not badly injured so the officers decided not to treat it. Meanwhile, after the rope broke, the bear immediately ran into the forest.

"We have carried out socialization to the public so as not to injure or kill animals that are protected by law, including sun bears. We also urge the public not to set snares around the area," he said.

In addition, the team voluntarily asked residents who set wild boar snares in their oil palm plantations to dismantle the snares and make a statement not to install snares that could harm protected animals.
