JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said the government would implement an Emergency Community Activity Restriction (PPKM) to suppress the spread of COVID-19 in Java and Bali.

The reason for choosing the two islands for the implementation of Emergency PPKM is because there are 44 cities and regencies in six provinces that have poor assessment scores. This is because the rate of transmission of COVID-19 is still quite high in the area.

He said this assessment was in accordance with the COVID-19 transmission rate indicators issued by the World Health Organization (WHO).

"Decided Emergency PPKM, especially Java and Bali. Because here 44, regencies and cities as well as six provinces whose assessment scores are four," said Jokowi when opening the VIII National Conference (Munas) of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) in Kendari , Southeast Sulawesi, Wednesday, June 30.

Furthermore, the former Governor of DKI Jakarta said that from a number of areas on the islands of Java and Bali, the transmission of COVID-19 was massive and evenly distributed to the RT and RW levels.

"An example of a map is in West Jakarta. RT, RW, and kelurahan affected by COVID-19 can see that it is like that, meaning that it is evenly distributed, so there must be a firm decision to resolve this problem," said Jokowi.

"Conditions like this must be conveyed as they are," he added.

Regarding the implementation of this Emergency PPKM, said Jokowi, the government is currently in the finalization stage. He hopes that the study will be completed soon.

"Today there is a finalization of the study for it. We hope it will be completed. I don't know if the decision will be in a week or two. Because we already know all the maps, especially Java and Bali," he said.

Previously reported, Spokesperson for the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Menko Marves) Jodi Mahardi said that President Jokowi had appointed Luhut Binsar Panjaitan as the Emergency PPKM Coordinator for Java and Bali. The government, he said, was concluding the formula for the tightening measures to be taken.

The essential sector, said Jodi, will continue to operate for a shorter duration. "Supermarkets, malls, and other essential sectors will continue to operate with shortened operating hours and strict procedures," said Jodi.

He asked residents not to panic about this Emergency PPKM plan. "Please don't panic with the news circulating in the WhatsApp group," added Jodi.
