Jakarta - MPR Chairman Ahmad Muzani reminded that unity should not be used to dampen differences of opinion. Instead, criticism should not be an excuse to damage unity.

Muzani conveyed this message when opening the MPR Annual Session and the Joint Session of the DPR and DPD at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Friday, August 14.

"Unity must be maintained day by day through justice, example, dialogue, and mutual trust. Therefore, maintaining unity means maintaining justice," said Muzani.

According to Muzani, democracy will not become stronger just because people are increasingly harsh in their condemnation. Freedom of speech must go hand in hand with responsibility, argumentation, and respect for people with different views.

Muzani highlighted digital technology which makes it easier for every citizen to express their opinions and engage in public debates.

However, the same space also makes hatred, slander, manipulation, and false news spread quickly.

"We must not allow public spaces to be filled with language that degrades human dignity," he said.

He also asked that political differences not damage friendships, break family relationships, or instill hatred between each other.

Muzani encouraged a culture of hard politics in ideas, but remained polite in delivery. Criticism, according to Muzani, is still needed without having to eliminate respect for the other party.

"Criticism should not be used to tear apart unity, on the contrary, unity should not be used to dampen differences of opinion," said Muzani.
