JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra emphasized that the content of alcohol promotion associated with the challenge of memorizing the Quran could be processed legally.
Yusril said that religious defamation is currently regulated in Articles 300 and 301 of the National Criminal Code (KUHP).
"I hope the police try to thoroughly understand the meaning of Articles 300 and 301 of the new Criminal Code to find solutions in resolving this legal issue so that it can be enforced fairly," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, July 13.
Yusril said that the content of the liquor promotion that had gone viral recently could not be directly said to be blasphemy or incitement to defile a certain religion.
However, Yusril said that this action was an inappropriate, offensive, and angry act for Muslims.
Therefore, with the reporting of the polemics by the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), Yusril hopes that the police can interpret various norms in the National Criminal Code correctly and fairly because articles 300 and 301 of the policy do not cover the entire rules related to blasphemy.
Thus, it is hoped that there will be a solution to overcome this problem so that if the party who makes the content does it unintentionally, they can apologize and the community who reports it can accommodate their dissatisfaction.
"Hopefully this can be resolved in a good way, in terms of ethics and in terms of the law that applies in our country," he said.
Yusril said that the police could later conduct an investigation and call experts to clarify the issue so that various legal norms in Articles 300 and 301 of the National Criminal Code can be applied fairly, appropriately, and with dignity in the community.

For this reason, added Yusril, if the problem is later resolved with restorative justice, it is okay, but the most important thing is that the police should not keep silent about the problem.

In the video uploaded, visitors read one of the suras from the Quran to get a gift of alcoholic beverages.
In response to this, the organizers through their official account have apologized and said that the challenge was outside the direction or approval of the organizers.
"We have never and will never tolerate any form of religious blasphemy or SARA-offending actions by any party operating in our event area, including sponsors and cooperation partners," the account wrote.
