JAKARTA - The Coordinating Minister for Community and Cultural Development (Menko PMK) Muhadjir Effendy assessed that people are often trapped in a label to determine identity, including the halal label on an item.

According to him, the halal label is currently only an attribute and is seen from the formal aspect not only from the material aspect. He admitted that he was surprised when a product suddenly became halal when the label had been affixed. Like for example a refrigerator.

"I was amazed that suddenly there was a refrigerator that got a halal certificate," said Muhadjir when he was a speaker at the virtual discussion event on Wednesday Hijrah, Wednesday, May 13.

"If there is a refrigerator that can be certified, it means that the other refrigerator is not halal. Maybe I don't know, but, if I have the impression, I apologize for making it up if even a refrigerator has to be labeled halal," he added.

According to him, the number of Muslims in Indonesia currently reaches 87 percent. So, products should be marked that are haram so that no people use them or eat them accidentally.

"Those are certain items that must be marked so that Muslims do not use, or do not eat, or whatever that means. But it should be that everything else automatically must be halal," he said.

Likewise with the Islamic label. He said, products that are not labeled with the writing of sharia will be considered invalid, while for sharia products it means that they can take the user to heaven. In fact, the substance is not like that.

So he asked the whole community to be more responsive to the labeling that often occurs in society. Including sharia economic labeling which is now a phenomenon in society.

"We are more critical in responding to all things (related to) labels like this," he concluded.
