Barantin Destroyed 312 Tons of Imported Feed Containing DNA of Pigs

BOGOR - The Indonesian Quarantine Agency (Barantin) has destroyed 312 tons of imported feed raw materials in the form of Meat Bone Meal (MBM) from Brazil after laboratory testing results confirmed that the commodity contained porcine DNA.

This firm step was taken to protect biological security as well as ensure the safety and halalness of the national feed supply chain.

The destruction was carried out on 12 MBM containers at the waste processing facility of PT Prasadha Pamunah Limbah Industri (PPLI), Cileungsi, Bogor Regency, Wednesday, July 22.

The commodities were previously detained by the DKI Jakarta Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine Headquarters after failing to meet quarantine requirements.

Head of the Indonesian Quarantine Agency, Abdul Kadir Karding, emphasized that Barantin implements a zero tolerance policy against any violation of quarantine provisions that have the potential to threaten biological security and the halal product assurance system.

"The state must not be complacent about the risk of pest and disease threats, nor from the aspect of halal. Every imported commodity must meet all applicable requirements. Therefore, Barantin does not tolerate any violations that can directly affect the safety and comfort of the community," said Karding at the destruction site.

He emphasized that the destruction was a form of the government's commitment to ensure that commodities that were proven to violate the provisions were not re-used or circulated in the community.

"We want to show that every commodity that is detained by officers is actually destroyed in accordance with the provisions. This is also a deterrent effect so that business actors are more obedient to quarantine regulations," he said.

The case began when the importer applied for quarantine measures on May 15, 2026. DKI Jakarta Quarantine officers then conducted a physical examination and sample collection of commodities to be used as raw materials for the poultry feed industry.

The results of laboratory testing using the Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) method showed that the positive sample contained porcine DNA. The findings were then confirmed through further testing at the Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine Standard Testing Center.

Although it was declared negative for Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and Salmonella contamination, the presence of pig elements was considered not in accordance with the Health Certificate issued by the country of origin.

Based on these findings, the Directorate General of Animal Husbandry and Animal Health of the Ministry of Agriculture revoked the production facility (rendering plant) permit for the commodity. In addition, the government also asked countries that supply feed raw materials from animals to complete the PCR test results as part of the export requirements to Indonesia.

Karding emphasized that compliance with quarantine regulations is not only an administrative obligation, but also an important part of protecting public health, maintaining national biosafety, and ensuring the safety and halalness of products circulating in Indonesia.

"We hope that business actors will follow all the provisions more orderly. There are no exceptions. Even if there are indications of criminal acts, we will process the case in accordance with applicable laws," he said.

The destruction was carried out through a chemical stabilization process before being buried in an authorized waste treatment facility. The activity was witnessed by the Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency (BPJPH), the Directorate General of Livestock and Animal Health of the Ministry of Agriculture, and a number of related institutions as a form of transparency in the implementation of quarantine measures.
