JAKARTA - Semarang Police have arrested hundreds of people suspected of being linked to thuggery in various areas in the capital city of Central Java.

"There are 281 people who have been arrested from several locations," said Head of the Operations Section of the Semarang Police AKBP Recky Robertho as quoted by Antara, Saturday.

According to him, this thuggery operation is part of the National Police Chief's instructions on strengthening the maintenance of security and order in the Semarang City area.

He said the 281 people were, among others, secured around markets, terminals, tourist attractions, to road intersections.

The perpetrators of the alleged thuggery included illegal parking attendants, buskers, street children, palak builders and street children.

"Furthermore, they are recorded and fostered. If there is a violation of the law, the law will be processed," he said.

He added that those who were not proven to have committed a criminal offense would be released.

He invited the public to report any disturbances in the security and social order through the available channels.
