JAKARTA - Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has stressed that Malaysia does not side with any power bloc, and will continue to build friendships with other countries on the basis of mutual respect.
Anwar expressed this in his concern with the current global geopolitical situation.
"Malaysia's foreign policy will continue to be based on freedom, firmness, and wisdom. We are not bound to any power bloc, but will continue to adhere to the belief that friendship must be built on the basis of mutual respect, not domination," Anwar Ibrahim said in a statement in Kuala Lumpur, Thursday, July 2, reported by ANTARA.
He said the world today is witnessing the fading of values that have long been the basis of relations between countries. Power and dominance increasingly defeat the truth, narrow interests trample on principles, while international law is applied selectively according to the convenience and taste of certain powers.
"In a situation like this, Malaysia will never sacrifice its principles, even if it will remain firm in upholding the country's firmness," he said.
Therefore, Malaysia, said Anwar, will continue to maintain peace, reject domination and imperialism, and stand firmly with those who are oppressed because justice should not be seasonal, and human dignity should not be measured based on geopolitical interests.
Anwar also emphasized that ASEAN remained the main forum that upholds justice in the region, not because ASEAN is a perfect organization, but because in an increasingly divided world, the effort to continue to sit together, dialogue, and find common ground is far more valuable than rhetoric that only fuels hostility.
He said Malaysia would continue to expand its network of cooperation, strengthen relations with existing partners, while exploring new potential with countries in the Global South.
"Our art and style of diplomacy are not just the language of diplomats and policymakers, but an effort to open opportunities for the people, raise the dignity of the country, and ensure that Malaysia continues to move forward with confidence; principled with wisdom, brave without haste, and firm without losing decency and human values," said Anwar.
