JAKARTA - The West Jakarta Residents Initiative held a socialization and training for residents-based waste sorting at the Jaya Cengkareng Market Square, Cengkareng Timur Village, Tuesday, June 23. This activity is part of an effort to encourage residents to reduce waste generation from households.

The socialization was attended by community elements ranging from PKK cadres, Karang Taruna, Early Community Awareness Forum (FKDM), Kelurahan Consultative Institution (LMK), Dasawisma cadres to Jumantik cadres. A number of West Jakarta Residents Initiative managers from the regional, sub-district, and village levels were also present at the event.

In this activity, participants received materials regarding waste management policies, household waste sorting techniques, to strengthening the role of waste banks as part of the development of a circular economy in the community.

The coordinator of the West Jakarta Residents Initiative, Marlin Bato, said the activity was designed to increase public understanding of the types of waste and its impact on the environment.

"We hope that this activity will be the first step to build a waste sorting culture that starts from home, is consistently carried out by residents, and develops into a joint movement that has a real impact on the environment," said Marlin, Wednesday, June 24.

In addition to socialization, participants also took part in the direct practice of sorting organic, inorganic, and residual waste. Residents were also introduced to the waste management mechanism through a waste bank that can provide economic value.

The West Jakarta Residents Initiative considers changing people's behavior to be an important factor in reducing the volume of waste produced daily from settlements. Therefore, waste management does not only depend on the government, but also requires active citizen involvement.

This activity is also a follow-up to the DKI Jakarta Governor's Instruction Number 5 of 2026 regarding the waste sorting movement. Through a participatory approach, residents are encouraged to make waste sorting a daily habit.

The event was closed with a declaration of waste sorting as a form of mutual commitment to strengthen the culture of waste management from its source and create a cleaner and healthier residential environment.
