JAKARTA - Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned Israel's latest attacks in the southern and eastern parts of Lebanon, which he considered to be expanding, causing more casualties and damage.

The Lebanese head of state also urged a comprehensive ceasefire as soon as possible.

"What we are witnessing today in the southern region and Bekaa, namely the widespread Israeli attacks and the increase in casualties and damage, is a dangerous escalation that should be condemned," Aoun said in a statement quoted from his official account on the social media platform X.

According to Aoun, the attack has hit dozens of innocent civilians, including women and children, and hindered efforts to strengthen the ceasefire and end the war, especially after the latest developments between the United States and Iran.

"These attacks will not stop us from continuing to work to achieve a comprehensive ceasefire as soon as possible," he said.

Aoun stressed that there should be no leniency in the matter because a comprehensive ceasefire is the gateway to discussing other important issues.

"There must be no tolerance in this matter, because a comprehensive ceasefire is a gateway to discussing other issues, especially the withdrawal of Israeli forces, the deployment of soldiers, and the return of prisoners," he said.

The statement was made after at least 31 Lebanese citizens were reported dead in the south and east of the country since early Friday. Israeli attacks continue despite the agreement between the United States and Iran coming into force.
