JAKARTA - Italy has expressed its readiness to join the international naval presence in the Strait of Hormuz after the United States and Iran announced an agreement to end the conflict.

As reported by Anadolu Agency, quoted Monday, June 15, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said Rome was ready to contribute with other partners. However, the move still requires parliamentary approval.

"We are ready, together with other partners and with the necessary parliamentary approval, to contribute to an international naval presence to support the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz," Meloni said via the X platform.

The Strait of Hormuz is an important route for the world's oil and gas shipments. Therefore, its reopening is a major issue for the energy market and regional security.

Meloni also welcomed the US-Iran deal with France, Germany, and the UK. He thanked the mediators, especially Qatar and Pakistan.

According to Meloni, the agreement opens up opportunities for peace that must be taken advantage of.

"Italy, as in the past, is ready to support the diplomatic process towards a comprehensive agreement," he said.

Meloni also stressed the importance of a cessation of hostilities in Lebanon. He said Italy would continue to work to support Lebanon's sovereignty.

The Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif earlier announced that the US and Iran reached an agreement after intensive negotiations. Both parties declared an immediate and permanent cessation of military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon.
