Student Protesters Enter HI Roundabout Area, Police-TNI Form a Barrier

JAKARTA - A mass protest from a number of universities in Jakarta was stopped from entering the Bundaran Hotel Indonesia (HI) area, Central Jakarta, because it was blocked on MH Thamrin Street by the officers on duty.

Hundreds of students wearing the alma mater of a number of universities marched (long march) from the Semanggi area to HI Circle.

Reported by ANTARA, the students arrived at Jalan MH Thamrin around 14.30 WIB, Friday, June 12, carrying a number of attributes of the demonstration. However, the masses were unable to enter the Bundaran HI area because officers lined up to form a blockade of part of MH Thamrin street.

Head of the Central Jakarta Metro Police, Kombes Pol Reynold E.P. Hutagalung, said his party did not allow the masses to make speeches in the Bundaran HI area.

"Please just here," said Kombes Pol Reynold when he had a dialogue with representatives of the mass action.

Reynold said when the masses held an action in the Bundaran HI area, the traffic flow would be disrupted and people's activities would be disrupted.

Even though it has been banned, the mass action tried to break through the barricades, but it was unsuccessful and then held an oration on Jalan MH Thamrin.
