JAKARTA - A total of 12 people were killed when a group of people opened fire in a slum settlement in South Africa.
South African police said the suspects were driven away in a white van from the Jumpers slum outside Cleveland, a Johannesburg suburb, around 11pm on Tuesday night.
"The suspects are suspected of entering the slum settlement through the two entrances and moving in the area, firing at residents and members of the community in several locations before fleeing the scene with the same vehicle," the SAPS said in a statement uploaded on social media on Wednesday, June 10.
Police said a search operation for the suspects had been carried out. There have been no arrests made, and no motive has been suspected, police said.
Eight men and three women were pronounced dead at the scene, while another injured man was taken to hospital, where he later died. Nine others were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds.
"Provincial and district detectives, supported by criminal intelligence and forensic experts, have been deployed to investigate the incident and track down the suspects," SAPS said in a statement.
The Greater Johannesburg metropolitan area is filled with semi-permanent informal settlements, almost all of which are considered illegal. The settlements are characterized by their typical houses, most of which are built with scrap materials, including metal and wood pieces.
