SUMEDANG - The Sumedang Police, West Java, have dismantled a gang of robbers posing as journalists, customs officers, and even fake police officers to deceive their victims.
Sumedang Police Chief AKBP Sandityo Mahardika said the three perpetrators arrested in the disclosure of the case used various false identities and professions to convince the victim.
"Many indicators were found. The perpetrator claimed to be a journalist, a policeman, then a journalist from other online media, and used various professions to convince the victim," said the Police Chief when releasing the disclosure of the case, as reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, June 9.
According to Sandityo, the gang is suspected of having carried out similar actions several times in the Sumedang area by directing the victim to a predetermined location before committing robbery and extortion.
He also said that the perpetrators were suspected of robbing a cigarette seller and draining the victim's money up to Rp. 45 million through the victim's banking application.
"The perpetrator asked the victim's mobile banking PIN and managed to take the money in the victim's account of Rp. 45 million," he said.
Three people were arrested, each with the initials ASP (46), SL (43), and AL (40). Meanwhile, the other two perpetrators with the initials A and D have been included in the wanted list (DPO).
He explained that the case was revealed after the police received a report from a student with the initials MFR (20) who was targeted by the perpetrator after receiving an order from someone who asked for the goods to be delivered to Conggeang District on Sunday (31/5) at 21.00 WIB.
When arriving at the designated location, the Daihatsu Gran Max vehicle used by the victim was hijacked by two cars being driven by the perpetrators.
"The victim was then pulled out of the vehicle. The perpetrator committed violence by tying the victim and threatening to use an airsoft gun," he said.
In addition to tying the victim, the perpetrator also beat and shot the airsoft gun at the victim's body, resulting in injuries to the head, face, and several other body parts.
After the victim was helpless, the perpetrators forced the victim to give access to his banking application before draining the funds stored in the victim's account.
The victim was then taken using another vehicle and abandoned in the Pasteur Toll Road area, Bandung City.
For their actions, the suspects were charged with Article 479 paragraphs (1) and (2) and Article 482 paragraphs (1) and (2) of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code regarding theft with violence and extortion with a maximum penalty of nine years in prison.
