JAKARTA - Minister of Environment/Head of the Environment Control Agency (BPLH) Jumhur Hidayat sent a letter to mining industry actors and holders of national industrial plant HGU who often fail to fulfill their obligations to restore and reclaim nature after operations.
The statement was made by Jumhur in response to the disclosure from the Head of the Nusantara Capital Authority (OIKN) Basuki Hadimuljono regarding the reforestation program of the former Bukit Soeharto mine area.
"There are so many mining activities that are not returned, hopefully the initiative of the head of the IKN authority to restore them can tickle those who support the mine," said Jumhur as reported by ANTARA, Saturday, June 6.
The majority emphasized that the massive exploitation of natural resources without restoration responsibilities is a form of violation of the ecological rights of the mining circle community, which has a fatal impact on the future of the earth.
Therefore, the Ministry of Environment demands full commitment from all mining business permit holders to restore the functions of the landscape, soil quality, and forest cover as before in order to realize climate justice.
"It should be the right of the local people, the earth, and the damaged environment to be returned. I know you are a hard worker," he said.
Meanwhile, Basuki in his virtual interaction revealed that the return of forest cover to the former mine hole area in the Bukit Soeharto area was part of the program for arranging buffer areas of the IKN.
He also emphasized that the tree planting action would be carried out massively in critical land clusters of former mine commodity mines, this commitment is a tangible manifestation of cooperation between OIKN with the Ministry of Forestry and a number of private parties as strategic partners who have operated in the area which was formerly part of East Kalimantan Province.
This environmental restoration step goes hand in hand with the transformation of the ecosystem in the 17-hectare Central Government Core Area (KIPP), where monoculture eucalyptus vegetation is beginning to be replaced by heterogeneous tropical forests to pursue the vision of a forest city.
The former Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) for the period 2014-2024 is even determined to make planting trees and sorting household waste a lifestyle for all levels of society and government agencies in IKN.
In this case, OIKN schedules every two weeks to plant tree seedlings and get together or korve.
"Planting trees in IKN will become a lifestyle. Yes, we do it every two weeks and this has been going on since 2025. So if 80 percent of the number of people alone are routine, it means there are 800 trees every week. So far, more than 19,000 trees have been planted with an area of more than 17 hectares in the Central Government Center Area. So, we want this to be one of the pillars of the development of IKN to become a forest city, not deforestation," he said.
