JAKARTA - The head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), Kirill Dmitriev, stated that further steps regarding the plan to build a tunnel that crosses the Bering Strait and connects Russia with the United States will become clearer by the end of this year.

"We are moving gradually and calmly, and by the end of the year the next steps will become clearer," Dmitriev said at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SIEF) 2026 when commenting on the tunnel construction plan.

Dmitriev, who is also the special envoy of the Russian President for economic cooperation with foreign countries, added that RDIF had signed an agreement with a company that would design the tunnel.

"Good dialogue (between Russia and the United States) is underway in many areas. So we continue to continue this dialogue," he said.

Meanwhile, during the SIEF plenary session, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that in the midst of the current tense and challenging situation, Russia continues to strengthen its sovereignty while expanding the circle of cooperation partners.

"In a tense and difficult situation, Russia continues to strengthen its sovereignty, not by closing itself off, but on the contrary, by expanding the circle of partners," Putin emphasized.

The Russian president then stated that the Russian government had been instructed to return to achieving sustainable economic growth rates starting next year.

"The main thing we have managed to maintain is the foundation of macroeconomic policy. I am confident that forward movement and growth can be ensured. These trends need to be strengthened, and our country's position in the world and our sovereignty must be stronger," he added.

SPIEF 2026 takes place on June 3-6. RIA Novosti acts as the forum's general information partner.
