JAKARTA - Member of Commission A of the DKI Jakarta DPRD, Riano P. Ahmad, assessed that the fire that occurred again in the Kebon Kosong area, Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, showed that the DKI Provincial Government's fire prevention efforts were still weak.

Considering that, not far from the location of the fire on Monday, June 1, yesterday, it had previously been hit by a major fire with the same suspected cause, namely an electrical short circuit. Therefore, the recurrence of similar events should be a material for evaluation by the relevant agencies.

"Some time ago, right in the Kebon Kosong neighborhood, there was also a very unusual fire, which was investigated by the relevant parties as a short circuit. Why is this happening again?" Riano told reporters, Wednesday, June 3.

Riano assessed that the high number of fire cases due to electrical short circuits showed that education and mitigation efforts in the community were still less than optimal. In fact, areas with a history of repeated fires should receive more attention in prevention programs.

"This means that there is a weakness in efforts to socialize, mitigate, and map out fire-prone areas," he said.

Riano said the DKI Jakarta Fire and Rescue Service (Gulkarmat) needed to be more aggressive in educating residents, especially in densely populated areas with high vulnerability levels.

"This electrical short circuit is the highest cause of fire. I hope that the relevant services, especially Damkar, must continue to educate, socialize, mitigate, and map the areas prone to fires," he said.

According to him, fires are indeed a disaster. However, when the causes found keep repeating, the government cannot just focus on handling after the incident.

Furthermore, Riano also responded to the program to provide one light fire extinguisher (APAR) for each RT which has been carried out by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government. According to him, the program is positive, but it cannot be the only instrument for preventing fires.

Riano assessed that the prevention approach must be the top priority. Because, without strengthening education and mitigation at the level of residents, fires have the potential to continue to recur in densely populated areas of Jakarta.

"The program is good, but it does not support fully addressing the fire. Yes, APAR is okay, but it is even better how to socialize, educate the community, mitigate, how to make simulations in regions, especially fire-prone areas," he said.
