Italian police have arrested two Pakistani nationals on charges of killing four farm workers by burning them alive in a van in southern Italy.

According to the daily newspaper Corriere della Sera, quoted by AFP on Tuesday, June 2, the four workers were also Pakistani nationals.

Their bodies were found when the van was still on fire at a gas station near the village of Amendolara, a vast agricultural area in the Calabria region.

Local law enforcement said CCTV footage from the gas station showed two people blocking the van's door from the outside and throwing liquids into the car.

The footage then shows the fire raging and the two men fleeing.

"This is clearly a murder, we just need to investigate the details," said the local police chief, Antonio Borelli.

The newspaper added that in recent months there have been 14 arson cases involving cars and minibuses carrying Pakistani nationals in the area near Amendolara village.

This case is also in the midst of controversy between migrants in the area regarding the division of agricultural work, residence permit documents, and accommodation.
