JAKARTA - A resident of Pal 100 Village, Rejang Lebong Regency, Bengkulu Province, was reported to have almost died after being attacked by a protected wildlife species of honey bear (Helarctos malayanus) while in his garden.

The Public Relations Officer of the Rejang Lebong Police, AKP M. Hasan Basri, when contacted in Rejang Lebong, Sunday, confirmed the incident and stated that the case was being handled by the Bermani Ulu Police.

"Alhamdulillah the victim is now conscious after undergoing treatment at the hospital. The victim is named Damhuri, 62 years old, a resident of Pal 100 Village, Bermani Ulu Raya District, Rejang Lebong Regency," he said.

He explained that the incident of wildlife attacks occurred on Sunday morning at around 06.00 WIB in the victim's coffee plantation. The incident was then reported by the village to the Bermani Ulu Police at 07.30 WIB.

The chronology of this incident, he said, began when the victim left home for his coffee plantation. Upon arrival at the location, the victim saw a honey bear eating jackfruit.

Suddenly, this wildlife chased and pounced on the victim, then scratched the left thigh resulting in a fairly severe laceration. The victim had to fight until the bear finally ran into the forest.

As a result of this incident, he added, the victim was immediately taken by the village head and local residents to the Assalam Curup Hospital for intensive medical treatment.

According to him, the Bermani Ulu Police personnel who received the report immediately moved to the crime scene (TKP). Officers together with local villagers then carried out a search and attempted to expel the animal.

"The police have also reported this incident to the Rejang Lebong Regency BKSDA for further handling," he said.
