Guatemala City - Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo has denied an agreement with the United States (US) to carry out joint military operations to eradicate drug trafficking in his country.

Arevalo said this on Thursday, May 28 local time after a report by The New York Times saying the country in Central America agreed to carry out joint eradication operations.

"There is no agreement. There are requests that are included in the framework of existing agreements in several countries," Arévalo said at a press conference, quoted by AP, Friday, May 29.

This is the latest in the midst of still tense relations between Latin American countries and the Donald Trump administration, which carried out military operations under the pretext of eradicating drugs until the arrest of then-President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro.

"What we are signing is the type of collaboration that has taken place in the past. We are doing maritime prevention where the United States has collaborated with training, capacity building, and equipment," said Arevalo.

Arevalo stressed that the joint agreement with the US so far is only in accordance with Guatemalan law and constitution.

"The only body that can authorize operations involving soldiers in Guatemalan territory is the Congress of the Republic. The Guatemalan government did not ask for this cooperation and has no plans to do so," Arevalo said.
