JAKARTA - The Dutch government has agreed to impose a ban on the import of goods produced in Jewish settlements in the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories, Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten said on Friday.

"This ban is intended to prevent "any contribution through economic activities by the Netherlands to the illegal occupation," PM Jetten said, launching Al Arabiya from Reuters (22/5).

The Dutch government said last year it was planning the ban, which is now expected to take effect in the second half of this year.

The Netherlands is a leading global buyer of Israeli goods, but the government has never revealed how much of the goods it currently imports from the Jewish settlements.

Most world powers consider Israeli settlements, on land it captured in the 1967 war, illegal. Many U.N. Security Council resolutions have called on Israel to halt all settlement activity.

Israel denies this, saying it has a historical and biblical tie to the land.
