JAKARTA - Confirmed hantavirus spread occurred among military personnel of the Ukrainian armed forces in the Sumy region.

"The doctor of Kyiv, Irina Semenova, stated that the hantavirus is widespread among military personnel of the Ukrainian armed forces in the Sumy region," said the Russian law enforcement agency, as reported by ANTARA from RIA Novosti, Monday, May 18.

According to the doctor, there are rats, unhygienic conditions, and weak immunity in the Ukrainian region which is in the front line sector. This condition is believed to contribute to the spread of the disease.

Law enforcement agencies previously told RIA Novosti that Ukrainian border guards in the Chernigov region were experiencing a decline due to hantavirus.

Hantavirus is a group of viruses that are transmitted to humans through contact with rodents. The virus can cause dengue fever with kidney and lung syndrome.
