JAKARTA - A missing US soldier during training in Morocco was found dead, while another soldier is still being searched.
A Moroccan military search team has reportedly found the body of a missing US soldier near a cliff during a training exercise.
The US Army identified him as First Lieutenant Kendrick Lamont Key Jr., a 27-year-old platoon commander in an artillery unit.
Meanwhile, another soldier is still missing and the US Army confirmed that the search operation is still ongoing.
Lieutenant Key's body was found on Saturday in waters along the shoreline at Cap Draa, where he and the second soldier were reported to have entered the sea.
"Our hearts are with his family, friends, teammates, and everyone who knew and served with him," said the commander of the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, Brigadier General Curtis King, launching The National (11/5).
The search effort has involved more than 1,000 US and Moroccan military and civilian personnel, the US Army said.
Two US military members participating in the 2026 African Lion joint military exercise were reported missing near the city of Tan Tan in southern Morocco, the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) and the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces said.
The Moroccan army said the US military member was lost near a cliff.
"Initial reports indicate that the two soldiers may have fallen into the sea," a US defense official told Reuters via email, as reported by Al Arabiya.
"I can confirm that this incident is not related to terrorism," he said.
African Lion is the largest annual joint exercise of the US Africa Command, which aims to improve interoperability among US forces, NATO Allies, and African partner countries.
This year's joint exercise takes place from April 27 to May 8 in four countries, namely Ghana, Morocco, Senegal and Tunisia.
Most of the exercises take place in Morocco and involve about 5,000 personnel from more than 40 countries, according to AFRICOM.
