JAKARTA - The intensive handling of flash floods that hit a number of areas in Bone Regency, South Sulawesi, continues to be carried out by a joint team by helping to evacuate residents and distributing emergency aid.

"Personnel from Basarnas, BPBD, TNI-Polri, Brimob, Satpol PP, to volunteers were deployed to help evacuate affected residents and distribute emergency aid at the flood site," said the Head of Operations of Basarnas Sulsel Andi Sultan in Makassar, Saturday.

He said the flood caused by heavy rain accompanied by high tide submerged hundreds of residents' houses in Tanete Riattang and Tanete Riattang Timur Districts.

Water levels in several locations were reported to be two meters, paralyzing community activities and trapping many residents inside their homes.

The joint SAR team used rubber boats to evacuate residents, especially the elderly, children, and residents who were in areas with high flooding such as Bajoe and Panyula Villages.

A number of residents were also moved to safer locations to avoid the risk of subsequent flooding.

In addition to evacuating, officers distributed logistical assistance in the form of ready-to-eat food, clean water, blankets, and other emergency needs to affected residents.

A disaster standby post was established to facilitate coordination of handling and data collection of victims.

Andi Sultan said the flood was triggered by heavy rainfall in conjunction with high tide, so that the water flow stagnated and overflowed into the residents' settlements.

Officers are still on standby at a number of vulnerable places to anticipate the unstable weather conditions. In the incident, two residents were reported dead.

The regional government together with the joint team is now focusing on accelerating the handling of the impact of flooding and ensuring that the basic needs of affected people can be met.
