JAKARTA - Iran has accused the United States of carrying out an attack in its territory and violating a ceasefire agreement following the conflict that broke out in February.
The accusations came after semi-official Iranian media reported an explosion in the country's territory on Thursday night.
An Iranian military spokesman said US airstrikes hit civilian areas along the coast of Qeshm Island, Bandar Khamir and Sirik, CNN reported (8/5).
He also claimed that the US violated the ceasefire by targeting an Iranian oil tanker heading to the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran responded with "reciprocal action" by attacking US military vessels east of the strait and south of the port of Chabahar, the spokesman said in a video broadcast by state media.
Earlier, Iran's Mehr News Agency said explosions were heard in the Bandar Abbas and Qeshm areas, but added "no official body has commented on the cause of these sounds."
Meanwhile, the semi-official Tasnim News Agency speculated, citing an unnamed source, that the United Arab Emirates may be behind the attack on Qeshm but said this had not been confirmed.
CNN has asked for comment from US Central Command and the United Arab Emirates.
Meanwhile, Nour News, a media affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said a passenger pier on Qeshm Island was reportedly hit.
Iran's Fars News Agency also reported residents in Bandar Abbas heard a sound resembling an explosion from various parts of the city.
Regional tensions have been on the rise since the US and Israel launched an attack on Iran on February 28, which triggered retaliation from Tehran against Israel and US allies in the Gulf, along with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
The ceasefire came into effect on April 8 through Pakistani mediation, but talks in Islamabad failed to produce a lasting agreement. The ceasefire was then extended by US President Donald Trump without a set time limit.
Since April 13, the US has imposed a naval blockade targeting Iranian maritime traffic in the strait.
