Two drones entered the territory of Latvia, a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), from Russian territory and fell, the Latvian military said on Thursday morning.
"The drone was likely launched by Ukraine against a target in Russia," Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds told LSM national broadcaster, The Straits Times reported from Reuters (7/5).
Military jet aircraft from the multinational NATO Baltic air policing mission had been called to the scene, he added.
Meanwhile, four empty oil tanks were damaged early Thursday at a storage facility in Rezekne, about 40 km (25 miles) from the Russian border, and possible debris from a downed drone was found at the site, police and firefighters said.
Firefighters extinguished an area that was still smoking an area of about 30 square meters in one of the tanks.
Latvian authorities then issued a drone warning to residents along the Russian border at 04.09 local time on Thursday, asking them to stay indoors.
Meanwhile, the city government said all schools in Rezekne would be closed on Thursday.
Prior to Thursday's events, several stray Ukrainian drones hit Latvia and its NATO neighbors, Estonia and Lithuania, in late March. One drone hit a chimney at a local power plant, while another drone fell into a frozen lake and exploded.
The Ukrainian drone is believed to have been launched to attack military targets in Russia.
The three Baltic states have never allowed their territory and airspace to be used for drone attacks on targets in Russia, their foreign ministers said in April.
