JAKARTA - Iran has called on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to reject the draft resolution on the Strait of Hormuz proposed by the United States.

"Iran calls on member states (of the UN Security Council) to act on the basis of logic and justice and principles, not pressure, to reject the draft and not support or become co-supporters," Iran's representative at the UN said in his statement, reported by ANTARA from Sputnik, Thursday, May 7.

"The permanent end of the war, the lifting of the naval blockade, and the restoration of shipping traffic are the only solutions to the problems in the Strait of Hormuz," the Iranian representative at the UN said.

According to Iran, Washington is pushing for a politically charged resolution under the pretext of freedom of navigation to push for a political agenda and legitimize illegal actions, instead of resolving the crisis.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday (5/5), US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that his party had submitted a draft UN Security Council resolution regarding the Strait of Hormuz to urge Iran to stop attacking, installing mines, and collecting cross-charges.

Rubio said Washington had adjusted the draft resolution so that the language was not too complicated.

Last April, the UN Security Council failed to adopt a proposed resolution on the Strait of Hormuz after a veto from two permanent members, namely Russia and China.

Russia's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Vassily Nebenzia said Moscow could not support a document that would create a dangerous precedent in international law.

According to Nebenzia, the proposed resolution is loaded with unbalanced, incorrect, and confrontational elements; while the language used can be interpreted by irresponsible countries to legitimize the use of violence.
