JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that the US military would temporarily suspend the "Freedom Project" to restore freedom of navigation for commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump said the decision was made at the request of Pakistan and other countries and followed what he called "tremendous military success" during the US campaign against Iran.
"Based on the request of Pakistan and other countries, the extraordinary military success we have achieved during the campaign against the Iranian state and, in addition, the fact that great progress has been made towards a complete and final agreement with Iranian representatives, we have agreed together that, while the blockade will remain in full force, the Freedom Project (Movement of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz) will be stopped for a short period of time to see if the agreement can be completed and signed," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, launching Anadolu (6/5).
Earlier, the Republican president announced the "Freedom Project" on Sunday, pledging to escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz despite Iran's insistence that any transit through the vital waterway requires prior approval.
Regional tensions have escalated since the US and Israel launched an attack on Iran on February 28, triggering retaliation from Tehran and disruption in the strait.
The ceasefire came into effect on April 8 through Pakistani mediation, but talks in Islamabad failed to produce a lasting agreement. The ceasefire was then extended by Trump without a set time limit.
Since April 13, the US has imposed a naval blockade targeting Iranian maritime traffic in the strategic waterway.
Also on Tuesday, Iran introduced a new mechanism regulating the transit of ships through the Strait of Hormuz amid a standoff with Washington over the strategic waterway.
Under the system, ships intending to pass through the strait receive an email from an address associated with the Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) notifying them of the transit regulations.
According to the state-owned television station, Press TV, the ship was then required to comply with the framework before receiving transit permission.
