JAKARTA - President Prabowo Subianto asked universities not to stop in lecture halls and laboratories. The campus is asked to help the local government solve real problems, ranging from garbage, cleanliness, city parks, to environmental arrangements.

The request was conveyed by the President to the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto in a meeting at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, Monday, May 4.

Brian said the President asked about the development of directions for campuses to form teams that could assist provincial, district, and city governments. The team is expected to be a kind of assistant for regional heads in finding science-based solutions.

"The President asked us, the Ministry of Industry and Technology, to convey the extent of the progress of majors, programs, and lecturers who can help local governments," said Brian.

According to Brian, the needs of the region are quite broad. A campus with architectural expertise can help arrange the beauty of the city and parks. Environmental engineering and mechanical engineering study programs can be included in waste management. Other fields can also be involved according to the problems faced by the region.

He said the government wanted campus work to be more structured. Therefore, the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education will consolidate universities such as ITB, UI, UGM, and other campuses to form a regional support team.

"Later the campus will have a team that will be like an assistant for the regional head, helping to solve these problems," said Brian.

Brian emphasized that the President's direction was in line with the Kemendiktisaintek Berdampak program. The point is, research and teaching on campus must be closer to community needs.

"How is the research and teaching that exists on campus relevant to the needs in their respective areas," he said.
