Prabowo Wants 6 Million Fishermen, Build 1,386 Villages and Ice Factories

JAKARTA - President Prabowo Subianto targets improvements in the lives of millions of fishermen through the development of fishing villages. This year, the government will inaugurate 1,386 fishing villages.

"This year we will inaugurate 1,386 fishing villages," said Prabowo in a Labor Day speech at Monas, Jakarta, Friday, May 1.

The program will be continued with the construction of 1,500 fishing villages in the following year. The same number is also prepared in the following year.

Prabowo said that around 6 million fishermen were the target of the program. If the fishermen's families are included, the number of affected people could reach more than 20 million people.

He said many fishermen have been sailing without adequate storage facilities. Therefore, the government will build an ice factory in each fishing village.

"Until now they have been difficult. They sail without ice. Now we are building an ice factory in every fishing village," he said.

Prabowo said that assistance would also touch fishing boats. He said the program was aimed at fishermen no longer going to sea with makeshift tools and facilities.
