JAKARTA - The South Korean government, Monday (27/4) began distributing direct cash assistance (BLT) to recipients of basic living needs guarantees and vulnerable groups as part of efforts to relieve financial pressure due to rising oil prices amid the war in the Middle East.

In the program, the South Korean government began accepting BLT applications, with a total of 550,000 won (Rp5.8 million) in aid for basic life security recipients, and 450,000 won (Rp5.2 million) per person for families with single parents and those just above the welfare eligibility threshold.

As reported by ANTARA from Yonhap, recipients outside the capital city of Seoul or those living in areas with declining population numbers will receive an additional 50,000 won (Rp585,000).

The application for assistance is open until May 8, and approved applicants can choose to receive BLT through credit or debit cards, prepaid cards, or vouchers in local currency.

The aid fund, which will expire on August 31, can only be used for small businesses with annual sales of 3 billion won (Rp35.1 billion) or less, or in businesses that receive local currency vouchers.

The South Korean government is also planning to distribute wider cash assistance to 70 percent of the lowest income groups, with the criteria for recipients to be announced early next month.

Earlier this month, the National Assembly approved a supplementary budget bill of 26.2 trillion won (Rp306.7 trillion), which includes the cash assistance plan, as an effort to overcome the economic impact of the conflict in the Middle East.
