JAKARTA - Commission I of the DPR has asked the UN to evaluate the protection of UNIFIL troops, Deputy Chairman of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives Sukamta has asked the United Nations (UN) to thoroughly evaluate the mechanism for protecting peacekeepers in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon mission.
"We encourage the UN to conduct a thorough evaluation of the mandate and protection mechanisms of the UNIFIL forces, so that they are in line with the reality of the evolving threats on the ground," Sukamta said in a statement received in Jakarta, Saturday.
The Yogyakarta electoral district legislator emphasized that the protection of personnel carrying out the UN's peacekeeping mission should not be ignored, including the parties to the conflict.
In addition, a transparent and accountable investigation is needed for the incident of the death of Praka Rico Pramudia due to a guided missile to ensure clarity and accountability,
"We consider that the protection of UN personnel must be a top priority and must not be ignored by any party, including in the dynamics of conflicts involving Israel and other actors in the region," he said.
He also asked the Indonesian Government to comprehensively review the aspects of security and the pattern of deployment of soldiers after the death of Praka Rico.
"The Indonesian government needs to conduct a comprehensive review of the aspects of security, readiness, and the pattern of deployment of soldiers in peacekeeping missions, without reducing Indonesia's commitment as an active contributor to maintaining global stability," he said.
The Deputy Chairman of Commission I for the Political, Legal and Security Affairs emphasized that world peace should not be paid for with useless sacrifices, including from soldiers on duty.
According to him, every soldier who dies should be a reminder that efforts to maintain peace require a strong system, adequate protection, and a joint commitment from the entire international community.
He also expressed his sorrow over the death of Praka Rico Pramudia, a best TNI soldier who served in the UNIFIL mission.
"We express our deep sorrow for the death of the best TNI soldiers in the UNIFIL mission in Lebanon. This sacrifice is a concrete form of Indonesia's commitment to maintaining world peace, as mandated by the constitution," he said.
It is known that Praka Rico died after undergoing treatment in Lebanon as a victim of an explosion of a UNIFIL mortar shell on Wednesday (29/3).
Sukamta continued that the death of Praka Rico must be a serious concern for all parties, especially the UNIFIL headquarters as the point of attack for the conflicting parties.
"The attacks that occurred in the UNIFIL operation area show that the situation on the ground has escalated significantly, putting peacekeepers at an increasing risk," he said.
The death of Praka Rico in the UNIFIL mission added grief to Indonesia. The total number of TNI soldiers who died in Lebanon became four.
In addition to Rico, the soldiers who died in the peace mission were Major Infantry Anumerta Zulmi Aditya Iskandar, Serka Anumerta Muhammad Nur Ichwan, and Kopda Anumerta Farizal Rhomadhon.
"Hopefully the soldiers who died will get the best place on the side of God Almighty and the families left behind will be given fortitude," said Sukamta.
