JAKARTA - DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung is exploring a sister city cooperation with Shenzhen, China, as an effort to strengthen the handling of urban problems, especially flooding and congestion.
The meeting with Shenzhen Executive Vice Mayor Tao Yongxin was held in Shenzhen, Thursday, April 23, with the target of signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in November 2026, starting with a Letter of Intent (LoI).
"Currently, Jakarta has established a sister city cooperation with Beijing and Shanghai. We hope to draft a LoI as a first step, to be followed by a MoU with Shenzhen," said Pramono.
He assessed that Shenzhen was relevant as a reference because it had similarities with Jakarta's challenges, ranging from population density, congestion, pollution, to flooding.
"Jakarta with around 11 million residents, as well as the Jabodetabek agglomeration area reaching 42 million people, faces problems that were also experienced by major cities in China. We want to learn from Shenzhen as a role model," he explained.
According to Pramono, this cooperation is expected not only to be symbolic, but to become a space for exchanging best practices in sustainable city management, including transportation solutions and flood control.
From the Shenzhen side, Tao Yongxin welcomed the plan positively and proposed cooperation starting from the status of friendship city before being upgraded to sister city.
"We are open to collaboration in the fields of technology, innovation, transportation, and inter-community relations such as student and cultural exchanges," said Tao.
He also offered cooperation in the development of electric vehicles, charging infrastructure, and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for public services.
As one of the world's technology centers, Shenzhen is considered to have experience in the development of smart cities that can serve as a reference for Jakarta in improving the quality of urban services and infrastructure.
