JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said Iran had halted a suspected plan to execute eight women arrested for anti-government protests, after he urged Tehran to free them to help peace negotiations.
"I greatly appreciate that Iran, and its leaders, respected my request, as President of the United States, and stopped the execution plan," he said on his Truth Social platform, launching Al Arabiya from AFP (23/4).
Meanwhile, Iran denied planning to execute the women.
Trump earlier said on social media that the release of the women could benefit Iran in negotiations, reposting an activist's claim that eight women were threatened with the death penalty by hanging.
However, the claim did not mention names but included photos of the women.
The fate of the US-Iran talks hosted by Pakistan is still unclear. The previous round failed because Tehran accused the United States of making excessive demands regarding the Strait of Hormuz and its nuclear program.
It is known that human rights groups say at least one woman arrested over the January protests has been sentenced to death, while at least one more faces charges that could lead to the death penalty and could be executed.
Human rights groups accuse Iran of using the death penalty to instill fear throughout society, stepping up executions of political prisoners amid a war against the United States and Israel.
